My name is Lisa Groome, and I work with Focus Ireland. We are organising the Focus Ireland Triathlon which is taking place in Grand Canal Square this year on Sunday, August 2nd 2009. I am emailing you in the hope that you may be able to help us out with Canoe safety support on the day. I have put all the details of the event below. Last year the swim element didn’t go ahead due to heavy rainfall which caused unsatisfactory water quality results, however this year we hope that the water event will go ahead in Grand Canal Basin, but we are also still sourcing an alternative area to hold the swim.
The funds raised will go towards our work to provide support services to over 5,000 people each year and also providing a place to call home for over 500 households through housing in Dublin, Limerick, Waterford Cork and Sligo. The event will be an exciting challenge for both first-time and experienced triathletes.
Participants will begin with a 750 m swim in the Grand Canal Basin, a 20km cycle followed by a 5km run along Dublin's historic quays. The event is open to both individuals and teams; teams must consist of three participants, with each member competing in one discipline only.
We expect 500 people to take part with a further 500 spectators. The swim will take place in Grand Canal Basin (Outer Basin). A wave start will be used with competitors divided into groups of 100 based on expected finish times. Faster swimmers will start in the first wave. A delay of 5 minutes will separate each group. The swim distance is 750m and the cut off time for completion is 45 minutes.
In order that the swimming part of the day goes off safely we are looking for volunteers to help us on the day. In total we will require
· Rescue boats – 25 canoes (to be on the water in case of an emergency)
We expect everyone to be in the water from 9am – arriving at 7.30 am. Roads close at 8am.Do you think you would be able to help us with some of our requirements specifically canoes and people who might spare some time to help out on the day? The water element would be finished at approx 11.30 pm and then at 1.30 pm there will be an award ceremony for the participants.
Any help that you could give us especially if you or anyone in you canoe club could volunteer to be out in the water on the day would be greatly appreciated.
My number here is 8815954
Many thanks again
Lisa
